Oilseed meals and feed grains, and why the grade name is not the specification

Ukraine is a major exporter of sunflower meal and feed grain. This page explains how meals and feed barley are graded, which rules apply and where to go next.

  • Meal protein grades such as HiPro are trade conventions defined by the contract
  • Protein figures need a moisture basis and a nitrogen factor
  • Feed law: Regulation (EC) No 767/2009 and the Catalogue of feed materials
  • Source-referencedEvery specification names the standard or authority behind it
  • Kept currentEach entry carries a visible last-reviewed date
  • Export-focusedImport requirements written for EU and global buyers

Key facts

In short: Oilseed meals and feed grains from Ukraine are bought on crude protein, fibre, moisture and contaminant results, with the basis stated. Grade names such as HiPro are trade conventions, and feed law sets the material names and undesirable substances.

What the category includes

  • Sunflower meal – low-pro, standard and HiPro grades set by dehulling.
  • Rapeseed meal – protein with glucosinolates and fibre to watch.
  • Feed barley – bought on hectolitre weight, moisture and mycotoxins.
  • Soybean meal – the benchmark the others are priced against.

How meal is graded

Meal protein rises as more hull is removed before crushing, and fibre falls. Grades are trade conventions, so the contract must give a protein minimum, a fibre maximum and the moisture basis. The sunflower meal grades guide explains the bands, and what HiPro means is the short version.

Feed law and schemes

Regulation (EC) No 767/2009 governs placing feed on the market and labelling; the Catalogue in Regulation (EU) No 68/2013 gives the names; Regulation (EC) No 183/2005 requires registered feed business operators; Directive 2002/32/EC and Recommendation 2006/576/EC cover undesirable substances and mycotoxins. GMP+ and FAMI-QS are private schemes, not law.

Contracts and transport

Meal and feed grain usually trade on GAFTA forms; see what a GAFTA contract is. Bulk vessels carry most volume, containers serve smaller buyers, and moisture and temperature at loading decide whether meal self-heats. The mycotoxins guide covers testing. Vorezan does not sell or broker meal; these pages explain how the category works.

Each product record gives the contract parameters, the reference methods and the feed law that applies, and the guides explain how grades are made and how offers are compared on the same basis. Feed buyers who start from the ration, then the basis, then the logistics, avoid most disputes before the first vessel is loaded.

Frequently asked questions

Is HiPro sunflower meal a legal grade?

No. It is a trade grade for meal from partly dehulled seed. The contract defines it by a protein minimum, a fibre maximum and the moisture basis; the label uses the Catalogue name.

Which limits apply to mycotoxins in feed?

Directive 2002/32/EC sets maximum contents for aflatoxin B1 and some other substances, and Recommendation 2006/576/EC gives guidance values for other mycotoxins. Buyers often add their own.

Do I need GMP+ certified meal?

It depends on your customers. GMP+ is not EU law, but many compounders in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany only accept certified feed materials and certified transport.
