Sunflower meal is the protein-rich residue left after oil is extracted from sunflower seed, and Ukraine is the largest exporter. It is sold in protein grades, from standard meal to dehulled HiPro, with fibre falling as protein rises. Buyers contract protein and fibre on a stated basis, moisture, residual oil, and Salmonella control.
At a glance
- Grades: standard and HiPro (dehulled), quoted by crude protein (trade convention)
- Formats: pellets (granules) or loose meal
- Key numbers: crude protein, crude fibre, moisture, oil and fat, sand and silica
- Feed safety: Salmonella, aflatoxin B1, dioxins under feed law
- Deep dive: protein grades for feed
Grades, cuts and calibration
Protein is quoted as crude protein, either as-is or on dry matter; the basis must be stated. Standard meal and HiPro meal are trade grades, not legal categories. The more hulls are removed before crushing, the higher the protein and the lower the fibre.
Pellets reduce dust and raise bulk density; loose meal is cheaper to produce but harder to handle. Both can self-heat if stored wet or hot.
Protein grades are trade conventions quoted on a stated basis; the same meal can be described with a lower or higher figure depending on whether it is reported as is or on dry matter.
Seasonality and availability
Sunflower is harvested in September and October; crushing peaks through winter. Sunflower seed is harvested from September to November and crushed through the year, so meal is available in every month; quality can shift when crushers switch to new-crop seed.
What the buyer checks at intake
- Crude protein and fibre on the contracted basis.
- Moisture, oil and fat, sand and silica.
- Salmonella result per lot and feed safety parameters.
- Temperature of the cargo on loading and discharge.
Where it is used
Compound feed for ruminants, poultry and pigs, where fibre level guides the inclusion rate.
Where each grade fits
Sunflower meal is a protein source for dairy and beef cattle, where its fibre is an advantage, and for pigs and poultry, where fibre limits inclusion. HiPro meal, made from partly dehulled seed, carries more protein and less fibre and competes more directly with soybean meal in monogastric diets. Standard meal suits ruminant rations and compound feed where fibre is welcome.
Read what HiPro sunflower meal is for the short answer and compare the amino acid profile with soybean meal: sunflower meal is rich in methionine and low in lysine, so nutritionists balance it with other proteins or synthetic lysine.
Standards and routes
Bulk vessels from Black Sea ports; railcars and trucks to EU neighbours.
Quality checks, storage and documents
Contract crude protein and crude fibre on a stated moisture basis, because a meal quoted as is and a meal quoted on dry matter are not comparable. Oil plus fibre, moisture, sand and silica, and urease are the usual supporting values; residual solvent is checked on extracted meal.
Salmonella is the main microbiological risk in oilseed meals, and feed mills test incoming lots; aflatoxin B1 and dioxins are checked under Directive 2002/32/EC.
Pellets flow better, create less dust and load faster into vessels, which is why most export meal is pelletised. Meal must be cooled before storage: warm, moist meal heats and cakes in the hold. Hold cleanliness, previous cargo and a superintendent survey belong in the contract.
For the wider category, see oilseed meals and feed; the seed itself is covered under sunflower seeds.
Common specification mistakes
- Protein stated without basis (as-is or dry matter)
- No Salmonella requirement
- Ignoring cargo temperature and self-heating
How to brief a supplier
- State the protein grade and basis
- Give fibre, moisture and oil limits
- Pellets or loose meal
- Require Salmonella testing and feed registration
- Agree contract form, sampling and analysis
