What Romania buys
Romania is a growing destination for frozen fruit and vegetables and one of the shortest corridors from Ukraine into the Union. It has its own soft fruit production, so imports fill grade and volume gaps rather than replacing domestic supply.
The buyer base is broader and individually smaller than in Germany or France.
- Processors buying imported raw material around their own crop.
- Retail packers supplying the organised retail chains, which are expanding.
- Food service and horeca distributors buying mixed portfolios.
- Traders serving both domestic demand and onward movement in the region.
How the buying side is organised
Decision cycles are short and relationships start small. The normal entry path is a trial load, then repeat loads on an informal programme, then a written seasonal agreement once the volume justifies the administration. A supplier who insists on a full seasonal contract before the first load usually does not get the first load.
Price sensitivity here has a specific shape. Buyers will pay for reliability, and they will not pay for a specification they did not ask for. An offer built on the highest grade you can produce reads as an expensive offer against a buyer who wanted the standard grade.
What sits above EU law
Behaviour rather than paperwork.
- No substitution without written agreement, however comparable the alternative looks.
- Documents travelling with the load, not after it.
- Honest border timing, built into the delivery promise rather than produced afterwards as an explanation.
- Pallet and stretch specification that survives unloading.
Logistics and calendar
Around 800 km from southern or western Ukraine to Bucharest by road reefer, two to three days door to door. Crossing points on this corridor vary in throughput and working hours, which is the main source of transit variance.
The calendar follows the domestic crop for the fruit categories and the buyer’s own production runs for the processing categories. The short corridor is the commercial advantage: it supports late ordering, part loads and same-week service in a way the western corridors cannot.
