Route Overview

In short: The Ukraine to Bucharest reefer road corridor passes through south-western Ukraine into Romania, providing access to Romanian buyers and a southern alternative to the busier western border crossings.

Route overview

The corridor runs through south-western Ukraine and crosses into Romania, serving Romanian retail and processing buyers. It also functions as an alternative southern gateway for loads that may continue onward into Bulgaria or other south-east European markets. Southern crossings can have different queue dynamics from the western ones, which is useful for shipment risk diversification.

Border crossings and documents

Main crossing points on this corridor include Porubne–Siret and Dyakove–Halmeu. A CMR consignment note is required for all road loads. The Ukrainian customs export declaration and the Romanian or EU import declaration must be prepared before departure. Fresh plant products may need a phytosanitary certificate, frozen and processed plant products usually do not, and products of animal origin need an official certificate and entry through a designated EU border control post; check the current requirement for each product before loading. Document completeness before departure is critical, as corrections at the border cause delays that affect cold chain integrity.

Cold chain and temperature records

Reefer units must be pre-cooled to the required set point before loading. Temperature records should run continuously from loading to delivery. Romanian retail and processing buyers increasingly request logger reports on arrival. Any seal break for border inspection should be noted in the CMR remarks field and in the logger record where possible.

Practical planning

Queue times at southern Ukrainian–Romanian crossings vary and should be checked via live border monitoring or through a local freight agent before scheduling. Southern crossings may be less congested than western ones during peak seasons, but this is not guaranteed and should be verified for each shipment. EU driver hours rules apply from the Romanian border. Delivery-slot booking at Bucharest distribution centres should be confirmed well in advance, particularly for retail consignments.
