What is HiPro sunflower meal?

Short answer

HiPro sunflower meal is meal made from sunflower seed that was partly dehulled before crushing, so it has more crude protein and less fibre than standard meal. HiPro is a trade grade, not a legal category: the contract defines it by a protein minimum, a fibre maximum and the moisture basis.

How it differs from standard meal

Hulls are mostly fibre. Removing part of them before pressing and extraction raises the protein share and lowers fibre, which makes the meal more useful in poultry and pig diets. Undehulled meal suits ruminants, which digest fibre well.

Read the basis

Protein is crude protein, nitrogen times 6.25. The same meal reads several points higher on dry matter than as-is, so an offer and a certificate on different bases can look like different grades. Write the basis and the method, such as ISO 16634-1, next to the protein figure.

Legal name

Feed law does not use the word HiPro. The label uses the name from the Catalogue of feed materials in Regulation (EU) No 68/2013, with the compulsory declarations, under the labelling rules of Regulation (EC) No 767/2009.

What to contract

Protein minimum with basis, crude fibre maximum, moisture, oil, form (meal or pellets) and the undesirable substances by instrument. The sunflower meal grades guide sets out the grades, and the sunflower meal record lists intake checks.
