Does organic certification mean the product is pesticide free?

Short answer

No. Organic certification regulates the production process, not the analytical result. It restricts which inputs may be used and requires that the whole chain stays under control. It does not promise that no residue will ever be detected, because drift from neighbouring fields, background contamination in soil and water, and shared equipment can all leave a trace.

What a detection actually triggers

A residue finding on organic goods starts an investigation by the control body, not an automatic decertification. The question is whether the substance points to a prohibited application, an external contamination event or a laboratory artefact. Until that is resolved the batch is usually blocked from being sold as organic.

What buyers do in practice

Most importers screen organic consignments against Regulation (EC) No 396/2005 limits in parallel with the organic documents, and set an internal action level well below the legal maximum. That internal level, not the regulation, is what usually decides whether a batch is accepted.

Ask a supplier for their residue monitoring plan and the last twelve months of results, not for a promise of zero. A supplier who reports and explains a finding is a lower risk than one who has never found anything.
