Comb honey is honey presented and sold inside sealed sections of natural beeswax comb, as stored by bees, and is defined as a distinct product category under the EU Honey Directive with specific labelling obligations.
In trade practice
Because the comb is fragile, producers pack sections individually in rigid trays or boxes to prevent breakage during transport. Temperature control is critical: heat above approximately 35 °C (indicative) softens wax and causes leakage, while cold can crack the comb. Wax moth infestation is a known risk in storage, requiring pest-management records. EU importers must verify that labelling complies with the Honey Directive definitions and that the product carries a valid veterinary health certificate from Ukraine.
In a specification
Contracts should specify minimum cell-capping percentage, maximum moisture of the honey within the comb, packaging format and temperature limits during transit to prevent structural damage.
