Overview

Hulled hemp seed – hemp hearts – is the soft inner kernel left when the hard outer shell of an industrial hemp seed is removed. It is a genuinely high-value nutritional ingredient: high in complete protein, high in polyunsaturated fatty acids with a favourable omega-6 to omega-3 ratio, and mild enough in flavour to go into products where a stronger seed would not.

Before any of that matters commercially, the compliance file has to be right. Industrial hemp cultivation in the EU is restricted to approved varieties within a defined THC threshold, and imported hemp products need variety documentation and cultivation authorisation evidence to move without difficulty. Ukrainian industrial hemp is grown under a national licensing regime. A buyer’s first question on this commodity should be about the paperwork, not about the protein content.

Grades, cuts and calibration

Hulling completeness. The primary quality grade, expressed as the percentage of residual shell. Shell fragments are hard, sharp and unpleasant, and they are what a consumer notices immediately. Grades run from a standard commercial level to a premium low-shell grade, and the difference in price is real because the sorting effort is real.

Colour and appearance. Creamy white to pale green kernel. A greyish or dull appearance usually indicates oxidation, and green flecks are residual shell or chlorophyll rather than a defect in themselves.

Oxidation. Hemp kernel is high in polyunsaturated fat, which makes it nutritionally interesting and chemically fragile. Peroxide value and free fatty acids should both be contracted, and the storage regime should be cool. This is not a seed to buy in bulk and hold speculatively.

THC and compliance documentation. Variety declaration, cultivation authorisation and THC analysis on the traded article. Thresholds and the documentary requirements differ between jurisdictions and they change; the requirement here is to name the file, not to restate a number that may not be current at the date of your shipment.

Seasonality and availability

Industrial hemp is harvested for seed in September and October. The seed is dried and cleaned, then hulled through the winter and spring against orders, because hulled kernel has a shorter life than seed in shell.

That is a useful thing for a buyer to know: whole hemp seed stores far better than hulled kernel, so a supplier who hulls to order is selling a fresher product than one who hulls the whole crop in November and sells it through to September. Ask when the lot was hulled, not just when it was harvested.

Ukrainian industrial hemp area has grown with demand from the plant-based and nutrition sectors, and the licensing regime means volumes are documented rather than estimated. Availability is reasonably predictable, and the constraint is usually hulling capacity rather than seed.

What the buyer checks at intake

  • Compliance file first: variety declaration, cultivation authorisation evidence and the THC analysis on the traded article. Without this the rest is academic.
  • Identity and lot: crop year, harvest date and – critically – the hulling date.
  • Residual shell content on a weighed and sorted sample against the contracted grade.
  • Colour and appearance against the reference; a grey or dull kernel indicates oxidation.
  • Peroxide value and free fatty acids, plus a sensory check. Hemp kernel goes rancid with a distinctive sharp note that is easy to recognise once you have met it.
  • Moisture and the microbiological panel.
  • Certificate of analysis covering residues and heavy metals, and the packaging integrity on every pack.

Where it is used

Plant-based and health food manufacture is the core market: protein blends, smoothie and bowl toppings, plant milks, energy bars and vegan formulations, where the complete protein profile and the fatty acid ratio are the selling proposition.

Bakery and snacking take hemp hearts into breads, crackers, granolas and bars, generally at modest inclusion because the fat content affects dough behaviour and shelf life. Retail takes them in pouches for direct consumption.

Nutraceutical manufacture takes hulled seed and hemp protein powder into supplements and functional formulations. Cold pressing takes whole seed for hemp seed oil, and the press cake becomes hemp protein flour – which is the outlet that makes the whole crop economic rather than just the hulled fraction.

Standards and routes

Ambient road and sea freight, but with a cool-chain preference that is stronger than for most seeds. The high polyunsaturated content means heat costs shelf life quickly, and a warm container in summer will visibly age a lot.

Barrier or vacuum packaging is the norm for hulled kernel going any distance. A plain paper sack is adequate for a short domestic movement and is not adequate for a container crossing the equator.

The documentation is where hemp differs from every other seed. Variety, cultivation authorisation and THC analysis have to travel with the consignment, and the requirements differ between destination jurisdictions and change over time. Confirm the current position for the destination before the shipment is booked, not afterwards – a hemp consignment held at a border on documentation is difficult and slow to release.

  • Compliance file before protein content

Variety, cultivation authorisation and THC analysis. A hemp consignment held on documentation is slow and difficult to release.

  • Ask the hulling date

Whole seed stores well; hulled kernel does not. A supplier who hulls to order is selling a fresher product than one who hulled in November.

  • Residual shell is the grade

Hard, sharp fragments are what a consumer notices first. It is a weighed, verifiable parameter – contract it.

  • Fragile by design

The polyunsaturated profile that makes it valuable is the same property that makes it oxidise. Buy cool, buy fresh, buy in barrier packaging.

Processing

How the product is handled from intake to dispatch.

  1. 1

    Harvest and drying

Seed combined and dried promptly to a stable moisture. Damp hemp seed heats and spoils quickly in a heap.

    Controlled warm air

  2. 2

    Cleaning

Air classification, sieving and destoning to remove chaff, stalk and foreign material.

    Ambient

  3. 3

    Hulling

Mechanical impact hulling to crack the shell, run against orders rather than for the whole crop at once.

    Ambient

  4. 4

    Shell separation

Air classification and gravity separation to remove the shell fraction. This step sets the residual shell grade.

    Ambient

  5. 5

    Sorting

Optical sorting for residual shell and discoloured kernel, then metal detection.

    Ambient

  6. 6

    Barrier packing

Vacuum or gas-flush packing immediately after sorting, then cool storage until dispatch.

    Ambient, then cool

Packaging

PackagingNet weightNotes
Vacuum or barrier bag in carton10 to 25 kg netThe correct default for hulled kernel. Removing oxygen is the only practical way to hold a high-polyunsaturated seed through a long journey.
Multi-wall bag on pallet20 to 25 kg netAdequate for a short ambient movement into a nearby market with fast turnover. Not adequate for a warm container crossing.
Retail pouch125 g to 1 kgPrivate label. Barrier film and a nitrogen flush are what make the declared shelf life realistic rather than aspirational.

Applications

Suitable for a wide range of food and beverage applications.

FAQ

Will hemp seed products clear customs without difficulty?

Only with the right file. Hulled hemp seed is a normal food ingredient in the EU and in most major markets, but it moves against variety documentation, cultivation authorisation evidence and a THC analysis on the traded article, and the specific requirements differ by destination and change over time. Confirm the current position for your destination before booking, and keep the documentation with the consignment rather than in a folder at origin.

Why does hulled hemp seed have such a short shelf life?

Because the fatty acid profile that makes it nutritionally attractive is chemically fragile. Polyunsaturated fats oxidise readily, and hulling removes the shell that was protecting them. Cool storage and barrier or vacuum packaging both extend the usable life considerably, and buying from a supplier who hulls against orders rather than in one winter campaign makes more difference than either.

What is the difference between hemp hearts and hemp protein powder?

Hemp hearts are the whole hulled kernel with the oil still in it. Hemp protein powder is what remains after the oil has been cold pressed out of the seed, milled and sieved – so it is much higher in protein and much lower in fat, and it is correspondingly more stable. They serve different formulation purposes and they are priced on different bases; do not treat one as a cheaper version of the other.
