Overview

Propolis is the resinous material bees collect from tree buds and bark and use to seal and sanitise the hive. Collection is either by scraping it off frames and hive bodies, which yields a lot mixed with wood, wax and paint fragments, or by fitting a purpose-made collection mat that the bees fill and that yields a much cleaner raw material at lower volume. The two are priced differently and they should be specified differently.

Raw propolis is rarely used as such. It is extracted, most often with ethanol to give a tincture, sometimes with propylene glycol or glycerine for an alcohol-free format, and increasingly as a dry extract on a carrier for capsules and tablets. The commercial parameter across all of these is the standardised content of the active fraction – typically expressed as total flavonoids – because propolis composition varies enormously with the trees the bees worked.

Grades, cuts and calibration

Collection method and purity. Mat-collected propolis is cleaner and commands a premium. Scraped propolis carries wood, wax, paint and hive debris and has to be cleaned – typically by freezing and milling, then sieving and density separation. Specify which you are buying and what the impurity tolerance is.

Extract format. Ethanolic tincture is the traditional and most efficient format, typically expressed as a percentage of propolis in the solvent, and it extracts the widest range of the resin fraction. Glycolic and glycerine extracts suit alcohol-free positioning and children’s products, and they extract a narrower fraction. Dry extract on a carrier is for solid dose forms; the carrier inclusion has to be declared exactly as it does for a fruit powder.

Standardisation. Total flavonoid content, determined by a stated method, is the parameter the trade uses. It is only comparable between suppliers if the method is the same, because different colorimetric methods give different answers on the same sample. Contract the method alongside the figure.

Wax and impurity content. Raw propolis naturally carries wax. A high wax fraction lowers the yield of active material per kilogram, which means a cheap raw propolis can be more expensive per unit of extract than a dearer clean one. Buy on active content, not on raw kilogram price.

Seasonality and availability

Bees collect propolis through the warmer months and deposit most heavily in late summer and autumn as they prepare to overwinter, so collection mats are typically harvested at the end of the season. Scraping happens during routine hive inspections throughout.

Composition varies with the trees available. Ukrainian propolis is largely poplar-type, which is the dominant European chemotype and the one most flavonoid analytical methods were developed against. That is a genuine advantage for a buyer who needs comparable numbers across seasons.

Raw propolis stores well frozen or cool for long periods, so availability is not strictly seasonal. Extracts are produced against orders. Yields per hive are small, which is why the volumes in this category are measured in tens and hundreds of kilograms rather than in tonnes.

What the buyer checks at intake

  • Identity and lot: collection method, harvest year, region and, for extracts, the solvent, the concentration and the carrier where present.
  • Impurity and wax content on raw propolis, on a weighed sample after cleaning.
  • Total flavonoid content by the contracted method. A figure without a method is not comparable to anything.
  • Solvent residue on dry extracts, and the alcohol content on tinctures where the destination has a declaration threshold.
  • Sensory and colour. Propolis has a distinctive resinous aroma; a weak one on an extract usually means a weak extraction.
  • Heavy metals. Propolis concentrates environmental contaminants and this is not a theoretical concern on a resin collected from bark.
  • Certificate of analysis plus the regulatory position for the destination market and format.

Where it is used

Food supplements are the main outlet: tinctures in dropper bottles, capsules containing dry extract, throat sprays and lozenges. This is where standardisation matters most, because a dose claim needs a known active content.

Oral care and cosmetics take propolis extracts into toothpastes, mouthwashes, balms and creams, where the cosmetic regulatory framework applies rather than the food one. Functional foods and confectionery use it in honey blends and pastilles at low inclusion, limited by the strong resinous flavour.

Buyers should treat the claims position as a separate exercise from the sourcing. In the EU any nutrition or health claim on a food or supplement must be authorised, and traditional use is not a route to a permitted claim. Confirm the classification and the claims position for your market and format before committing to artwork.

Standards and routes

Raw propolis travels ambient or chilled and is best shipped cool, because it becomes soft and sticky above roughly 25 degrees Celsius and will fuse into an unhandleable block.

Ethanolic tinctures are flammable liquids and are subject to dangerous goods rules for transport depending on the alcohol content and the packaging. This is the most commonly missed requirement in the category and it will stop a shipment at the point of collection rather than at the border. Confirm the classification before booking.

Dry extracts travel as ordinary ambient powders in barrier packaging. Volumes across the whole category are small, so groupage is the norm and clear lot documentation matters more than it would on a full load.

  • Buy on flavonoids, with the method

Standardised active content is the only comparable number, and it is only comparable if the analytical method matches.

  • Collection method sets the purity

Mat-collected propolis is clean; scraped propolis carries wood, wax and paint. Two products, two prices.

  • Tinctures may be dangerous goods

Ethanolic extracts can fall under flammable liquid transport rules. The most commonly missed requirement in this category.

  • Claims are a separate exercise

In the EU a health claim must be authorised. Traditional use is not a route. Settle the claims position before artwork.

Processing

How the product is handled from intake to dispatch.

  1. 1

    Collection

Collection mats placed in the hive and harvested at the end of the season, or propolis scraped from frames during inspections.

    Ambient

  2. 2

    Freezing and milling

Raw propolis frozen so it becomes brittle, then milled. This is the only practical way to reduce a sticky resin to a workable granulate.

    Minus 18 C, then ambient

  3. 3

    Cleaning

Sieving and density separation to remove wood, wax and hive debris.

    Cool ambient

  4. 4

    Extraction

Maceration or percolation in the contracted solvent for the contracted period.

    Controlled ambient to warm

  5. 5

    Filtration and concentration

Filtered to remove the insoluble fraction, then concentrated, or spray dried onto a carrier for a dry extract.

    Controlled

  6. 6

    Standardisation and packing

Adjusted to the contracted flavonoid content, analysed, and packed into the appropriate container for the format.

    Cool, dark

FAQ

What is the difference between an ethanolic and a glycolic extract?

Which fraction of the resin comes out and what you can put it in. Ethanol extracts the widest range of the propolis actives and is the traditional and most efficient route, but it produces an alcoholic product with transport and labelling consequences. Propylene glycol and glycerine extract a narrower fraction and give an alcohol-free product suitable for children’s ranges and for markets where alcohol is a problem. They are not interchangeable at equal flavonoid content.

Why do two suppliers quote very different flavonoid figures?

Usually the analytical method, not the material. The common colorimetric methods for total flavonoids respond differently to the same compounds, so the same sample can produce meaningfully different numbers depending on which is used. Always contract the method alongside the figure, and where you are comparing suppliers, get one laboratory to run both samples by one method.

Can I make health claims on a propolis product in the EU?

Only claims that are authorised under the applicable claims framework for the product’s classification. Propolis has a long tradition of use, and that tradition is not itself a legal basis for a claim on a food or food supplement. The classification of the product, the permitted claims and the labelling all need to be confirmed for your specific destination market and format before you commit to packaging.
