Tray packaging is a format using rigid or semi-rigid trays, typically sealed with a film lid, that presents retail portions of fruit, berries or vegetables while maintaining product integrity during distribution.
In trade practice
Trays are produced from cardboard, PET or moulded pulp, and the choice of material affects cold-chain performance and sustainability claims. For frozen or chilled berries, PET trays sealed under modified atmosphere are common in EU retail channels. Suppliers must ensure the tray and lidding film both carry declarations of compliance under Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004. A common error is specifying tray dimensions without confirming compatibility with the retailer’s shelf or display equipment, leading to costly repackaging.
In a specification
A specification for tray-packed product typically states tray material, internal dimensions, fill weight, lidding film type and sealing method, with reference to the required declaration of compliance.
