Bulk Packaging

Letter

Bulk packaging refers to large-format industrial containers used in B2B food supply, such as lined cartons, big bags and drums, designed to minimise packaging cost per kilogram and suit further processing or repacking rather than direct retail sale.

In trade practice

For frozen fruit and vegetables, bulk packaging typically means polyethylene-lined corrugated cartons; for liquid products such as purees, aseptic drums or bag-in-box formats are standard; for grains and pulses, woven polypropylene big bags are common. Buyers should specify liner thickness, food-grade material compliance under Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 for plastics, and whether the outer carton must carry a specific language label. A frequent error is failing to state pallet pattern and maximum stack height, which leads to load instability during reefer transport.

In a specification

A product specification should define the packaging format, net weight per unit, liner material and grade, outer carton burst strength and any print requirements, with reference to applicable EU food-contact material regulations.
