Exporters and importers consult the TARIC database to confirm the correct ten-digit code for their product before preparing customs declarations. An incorrect code can result in the wrong duty rate being applied, a missed quota entitlement or failure to flag a required import condition such as a health certificate. Freight forwarders and customs brokers routinely cross-check the code against the commodity description and processing method, since frozen, dried and processed forms of the same raw material often fall under different headings.
