The General Food Law, Regulation (EC) No 178/2002, is the foundation of EU food legislation, establishing the principles of food safety, traceability and the responsibilities of food business operators. It created the European Food Safety Authority and the Rapid Alert System and requires unsafe food to be withdrawn from the market.
