Contaminants Regulation

Letter

Contaminants Regulation refers to Regulation (EU) 2023/915, which sets maximum levels for contaminants including mycotoxins, heavy metals and process contaminants in food, and prohibits placing non-compliant consignments on the EU market.

In trade practice

Buyers and QA teams require certificates of analysis from accredited laboratories confirming that results fall within the maximum levels in Regulation (EU) 2023/915 before accepting a consignment. For grains, nuts and dried fruit, aflatoxin and ochratoxin A testing is standard at supplier approval and at each shipment. A common mistake is relying on a certificate issued against an older regulation that has since been superseded, leaving the importer exposed during official controls.

In a specification

Specifications typically state that all contaminant results must comply with the maximum levels in Regulation (EU) 2023/915 as amended, with test reports from accredited laboratories provided per lot.
