A freight forwarder is a specialist logistics intermediary that organises international transport on behalf of shippers, coordinating bookings, documentation, customs clearance, and transhipments across multiple carriers and modes.
In trade practice
For Ukrainian food exports, a freight forwarder typically books reefer truck or container space, prepares or reviews the customs document set including the CMR, commercial invoice, packing list, and phytosanitary certificate, and liaises with border control points. Forwarders experienced in EU sanitary and phytosanitary border procedures can significantly reduce the risk of delays at entry points. Buyers and sellers should confirm whether the forwarder holds relevant liability insurance and whether its scope covers customs brokerage or only transport coordination. Appointing a forwarder without reefer experience is a common and costly mistake.
In a specification
The logistics or service agreement with a freight forwarder should define the scope of services, liability limits, the document set the forwarder is responsible for preparing, and the Incoterms rule governing the underlying sale.
