EXW (Ex Works)

Letter

Ex Works is an Incoterms 2020 rule under which the seller makes goods available at its own premises and the buyer assumes all costs and risks from that point, including loading, export clearance, transport and import.

In trade practice

In practice, EXW is uncommon for Ukrainian food exports because the seller is better placed to handle Ukrainian export formalities, including phytosanitary inspection and customs clearance. Buyers who accept EXW terms must arrange their own haulier to collect from the seller’s site, manage export documentation and bear any delay risk at origin. FCA is usually preferred as it shifts export clearance responsibility to the seller while still allowing the buyer to nominate the carrier.

In a specification

A contract or pro forma invoice specifying Ex Works terms must name the exact collection point, such as the seller’s cold store address, in full.
