Warehouse Management System

Letter

A warehouse management system is software that directs and records warehouse operations, including receiving, put-away, picking and dispatch, and is essential in food trade for batch tracking, temperature zone control and expiry-date rotation logic.

In trade practice

Food warehouse operators configure the system with temperature zone rules so that frozen, chilled and ambient goods are never mixed. Batch numbers and best-before dates are captured at goods receipt and linked to every subsequent movement. Picking instructions enforce FEFO rotation automatically, reducing the risk of expired stock reaching dispatch. Customer reports and recall exercises draw on the same data, so accuracy at receipt is critical.

In a specification

Purchase or service contracts for cold storage typically require the operator to maintain a warehouse management system capable of producing a full batch movement report within a defined timeframe, often stated as a maximum number of hours.
