Batch management is the practice of recording and tracking goods in defined production or receipt groups, each assigned unique identifiers and quality data, enabling precise stock rotation, targeted investigations and limited recalls.
In trade practice
At intake or production, each batch receives a unique code linked to supplier, production date, test results and quantity. Warehouse and ERP systems use these codes to drive FEFO or FIFO rotation and to isolate affected stock during a quality event. Auditors under BRCGS or IFS Food verify that batch records are complete and that a mock recall can trace a batch from finished goods back to raw material within a defined time. A frequent gap is incomplete linkage between a supplier batch code and the internal warehouse code, which slows traceability exercises.
In a specification
Specifications and quality agreements typically require that each batch is assigned a unique identifier, that associated test certificates and intake records are retained for a defined period, and that full forward and backward traceability can be demonstrated on request.
