Mushroom spawn is grain or another carrier material inoculated with pure mushroom mycelium, used to seed a growing substrate and initiate fruiting body development in commercial cultivation.
In trade practice
Spawn quality, strain selection and sterile handling are critical determinants of yield consistency and fruiting body characteristics such as cap size and colour. Suppliers of cultivated mushrooms for the frozen or dried trade typically source spawn from specialist laboratories and maintain records of strain identity and production batch. Contaminated or poorly stored spawn is a common cause of crop failure and inconsistent raw material quality reaching the processing line.
In a specification
Where spawn type is relevant to a product specification, contracts may reference the cultivated species and strain designation to ensure traceability back to the propagation stage.
