Mushroom substrate is the composted or pasteurised organic medium on which cultivated mushrooms grow, typically based on straw, hardwood sawdust or agricultural by-products, and its composition directly determines yield, hygiene and fruiting consistency.
In trade practice
Substrate producers pasteurise or sterilise the bulk material to eliminate competing moulds before inoculation with spawn. Moisture content is monitored throughout colonisation, as values outside the target range suppress mycelial growth or promote bacterial contamination. QA teams check substrate batches for pH, moisture and absence of visible contamination before use. Buyers of cultivated mushrooms rarely specify substrate composition directly, but auditors may review it during GlobalG.A.P. or equivalent farm assessments.
In a specification
Substrate type and pasteurisation method may be recorded in a farm quality plan or third-party audit report; finished-product specifications do not normally reference substrate directly.
