A master carton is the outer corrugated carton that groups multiple retail or consumer units for transport and storage, carrying product identification, batch, date and handling information required for traceability and logistics.
In trade practice
Buyers specify master carton dimensions to ensure efficient pallet utilisation, and suppliers must confirm that carton dimensions and stacking strength are validated for the intended load height and storage conditions, including frozen temperatures where board strength can change. Labels on master cartons must include at minimum product name, net weight, batch or lot code, best-before date and country of origin to satisfy EU traceability requirements. A frequent error is printing labels that omit the lot code or use a format that scanners at intake cannot read. Carton integrity is checked at intake as part of standard goods-in inspection.
In a specification
Specifications state master carton external dimensions, board grade, maximum stacking load and required label fields, often referencing a label template agreed between buyer and supplier.
