Dry ice is solid carbon dioxide at about −78.5 °C, used as a refrigerant for small shipments, samples and short-duration insulated transport where no mechanical refrigeration is available. It sublimates into gas, so packaging must allow venting, and quantities are limited in air freight for safety reasons.
