A letter of credit (L/C) is a payment instrument in which the buyer’s bank undertakes to pay the seller upon presentation of complying documents, such as invoice, bill of lading and certificates. Governed by the ICC’s UCP 600 rules, it reduces risk for both parties in first-time or high-value international food transactions.
