Logistics Route

Ukraine to Istanbul — Container Sea Route

Black Sea container service from Odesa region ports to Marmara terminals

Route Overview

Istanbul is the natural first maritime destination for Ukrainian pulses. The sailing is short, the terminals are deep and well served, and the Marmara region concentrates a large share of Türkiye’s pulse milling, canning and repacking capacity. For cargo that will not stay in Türkiye, the same terminals function as a redistribution point into the eastern Mediterranean, the Levant and North Africa.

Why this corridor suits dried pulses

Dried pulses are dense, non-perishable and tolerant of ambient transport. That combination makes them close to an ideal container cargo: a 20-foot box reaches its weight limit long before it fills, so the freight economics are driven by tonnage rather than volume, and no reefer plug or temperature logger is needed. The trade-off is that everything which does go wrong on this route goes wrong through moisture.

Managing the moisture risk

A container crossing the Black Sea in late summer heats on deck during the day and cools sharply at night. Water evaporating from the cargo condenses on the steel roof and drips back onto the top layer. The controls are all applied before departure: ship at or below the contractual moisture, load the cargo cool rather than straight off a drier, fit a kraft or ventilated liner, and add desiccant. Stowing under deck where the carrier allows it removes most of the diurnal swing.

Documentation and clearance

Export clearance on the Ukrainian side follows the standard food export path: customs declaration against the tariff classification, phytosanitary inspection and certificate, and the commercial set. Wood pallets must carry the international phytosanitary mark. On arrival, the Turkish competent authority applies its own food control regime, and cargo destined onward into the EU has to satisfy EU import requirements at the point it actually enters the Union — a distinction that catches out exporters who assume Turkish clearance settles the question.

Commercial framing

Most business on this corridor is written on a GAFTA form with an Incoterms delivery basis and a Codex-derived quality clause. Because the voyage is short, the interval between loading and the buyer’s arrival sample is small, which reduces the scope for arguments about deterioration in transit — one of the practical advantages of the route over longer sailings to northern Europe or Asia.

Planning notes

Service availability, war-risk insurance terms and port working arrangements in the Black Sea have changed repeatedly and can change again. Vorezan describes the corridor as it is normally operated; confirm current sailings, insurance cover and clearance practice with your carrier and insurer before committing to a shipment window. For the longer alternative into southern Türkiye and the eastern Mediterranean, see the Ukraine to Mersin route.
