Size grading is the separation of fruit, vegetables or nuts into defined size classes by diameter or weight, ensuring uniformity that supports even freezing, predictable pack counts and compliance with buyer or regulatory grade requirements.
In trade practice
Roller graders, mesh screens and electronic weighers are the principal machines used, selected according to product type and fragility. For IQF fruit, uniform size is critical because mixed sizes cause uneven freezing and clumping. Buyers specify size classes in product specifications, often referencing EU marketing standards or private grade definitions. A common error is failing to recalibrate grading equipment between crop seasons when average fruit size shifts.
In a specification
A specification should state the size class or diameter range required and the maximum percentage of pieces outside that range, referencing the applicable EU marketing standard or agreed private grade where relevant.
