Queen Bee

Letter

The queen bee is the single fertile female in a honey bee colony, responsible for egg-laying and pheromone production that regulates colony behaviour, with her quality and age directly affecting honey yield.

In trade practice

Commercial beekeepers in Ukraine typically replace queens on a one- to two-year cycle to maintain colony productivity and reduce swarming risk. Queen performance is assessed by brood pattern, laying rate and colony temperament during hive inspections. Buyers of Ukrainian honey who require organic or residue-controlled product may ask suppliers to document colony management practices, including queen replacement records. Poor queen condition is a common cause of colony decline and reduced seasonal honey output.

In a specification

Queen replacement schedules and colony management records are not normally written into honey purchase contracts but may be requested as supporting documentation under organic certification or private quality schemes.
