An apiary is a managed site where beehives are kept for honey production or pollination services, and its location, hygiene and record-keeping directly affect the traceability and quality of honey entering export supply chains.
In trade practice
For export honey, the apiary must be registered with the relevant national veterinary authority, and each hive site is assigned an identification number that appears on harvest records and health documentation. Inspectors verify that the apiary is situated at a sufficient distance from pesticide-treated crops, industrial sites and waste facilities, as proximity affects residue levels in honey. Ukrainian exporters are required to maintain apiary passports recording treatments, harvests and colony movements, which form the basis of the official health certificate accompanying each consignment to the EU.
In a specification
Contracts for export honey commonly reference the apiary registration number and require that harvest records linking each lot to a specific apiary site be made available on request.
