Health Claims Regulation

Letter

Health Claims Regulation is the common name for Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006, which harmonises nutrition and health claims on foods in the EU, permitting only claims that are truthful, substantiated and, for health claims, authorised on the Union register.

In trade practice

Buyers sourcing honey, berry powders or nut ingredients must verify that any functional or health-related statements on supplier packaging or trade documentation correspond to an authorised claim on the EU register. Suppliers exporting to the EU sometimes include unapproved claims on origin-market packaging, requiring label revision before EU distribution. QA teams check both the claim wording and the required conditions of use attached to each authorised entry.

In a specification

Purchase specifications for ingredients marketed with functional properties should state that no health or nutrition claim may appear on finished-product labelling unless it is authorised under Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006.
