Food irradiation treats product with ionising radiation to reduce microorganisms and pests. In the EU it is authorised only for limited categories, essentially dried aromatic herbs, spices and vegetable seasonings, under Directives 1999/2/EC and 1999/3/EC, and treated food must be labelled. It is not a permitted treatment for frozen fruit.
