Spice Irradiation

Letter

Spice irradiation is a decontamination method that applies ionising radiation to dried herbs and spices to reduce microbial loads, permitted in the EU under Directive 1999/2/EC but subject to mandatory labelling that restricts acceptance in natural and organic segments.

In trade practice

Irradiated batches must carry the word irradiated or the Radura symbol on all labels and accompanying documents throughout the supply chain. EU border controls and market surveillance check for undeclared irradiation using photostimulated luminescence or thermoluminescence testing. Buyers sourcing for organic or clean-label ranges typically exclude irradiation by contract clause. Suppliers must hold treatment facility authorisation records and provide a certificate of irradiation with each shipment.

In a specification

A specification or purchase contract should state explicitly whether irradiation is permitted or prohibited and, if permitted, require a certificate of irradiation stating dose and facility details.
