Contaminant

Letter

A contaminant is any substance not intentionally added to food that is present as a result of production, processing, storage or transport — for example heavy metals, mycotoxins, pesticide residues or foreign bodies. Maximum levels for contaminants in food are set in the EU by Regulation (EU) 2023/915.
