How long does EU customs clearance take for a frozen load?

Short answer

For a correctly prepared road consignment with a documentary check only, the customs step itself is normally a matter of hours rather than days. That is not the same as saying the border takes hours.

Three separate clocks run at a crossing, and they should be planned separately.

  1. **Queue time.** Waiting to be processed at all. This varies by crossing point, day of week and season, and it is the largest single source of transit variance on the Ukraine to EU corridors.
  2. **Clearance time.** Lodging and processing the declaration. Short when the file is complete and consistent.
  3. **Control time.** Zero if no check is drawn. Hours for an identity check. Potentially days for a physical check with laboratory analysis, because the result has to come back before release.

For planning purposes, treat the border as a variable of one to two days on the main Polish crossings and build that into the delivery promise rather than into the apology. On the shorter southern corridors the crossing points differ in throughput and working hours, and a truck arriving outside working hours simply waits.

The exporter cannot shorten the queue. The exporter can guarantee that clearance is not the bottleneck, by making sure the importer has a complete and self-consistent document set before the truck reaches the frontier.
