Overview

ISO 9001:2015 is the international standard for quality management systems (QMS). It defines requirements for consistently meeting customer and applicable regulatory requirements, built on the process approach, the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle and risk-based thinking. Like other ISO management standards, it follows the High Level Structure (clauses 4–10).

ISO 9001 does not certify products and does not address food safety hazards — that is the role of HACCP-based systems and GFSI schemes. In B2B food supply, a certified QMS is nevertheless valued as evidence of management maturity: document control, complaint handling, supplier evaluation and continual improvement are exactly the processes buyers probe during supplier assessments.

  • Shares its structure with ISO 22000

Both use the harmonised high-level structure, so an organisation can run one documented system, one internal audit programme and one management review.

  • Risk-based thinking

The 2015 edition replaced preventive action with risk and opportunity planning throughout the system.

  • Says nothing about food safety

A supplier offering ISO 9001 in answer to a food safety question has not answered it.

How it Compares

Positioning against neighbouring schemes.

  • Versus ISO 22000

Same architecture, different subject. ISO 22000 adds hazard analysis, prerequisite programmes and food chain communication.

  • Versus BRCGS

Not comparable. BRCGS is product-safety specific and prescriptive; ISO 9001 is generic.

FAQ

Is ISO 9001 enough for a food buyer?

No. It is a quality management system standard and carries no food safety requirements.

Does it help with a food safety audit?

Indirectly. Document control, internal audit and corrective action are already in place, which removes a large part of the workload.

Who certifies it?

An accredited certification body, verifiable through the accreditation body register.
