How is frozen fruit transported?

Short answer

Frozen fruit moves in temperature-controlled reefer equipment held at -18 degrees Celsius or colder: refrigerated road trailers for European destinations, reefer containers for sea freight. A standard reefer semi-trailer carries 33 EUR pallets and around 22 tonnes, so frozen berry loads usually fill the space before they reach the weight limit.

Road, sea and the choice between them

Road reefer dominates Ukraine to EU flows because transit is measured in days and the load goes door to door without a transfer. Sea freight in reefer containers becomes attractive for longer distances and larger volumes, at the cost of longer transit and an extra handover at each port.

Groupage – sharing a trailer – is possible but adds cross-dock handovers, and every handover is a place where temperature evidence goes missing. For frozen product, full loads are easier to defend.

What travels with the goods

Alongside the commercial invoice and packing list, a frozen consignment normally carries the transport document, the health or veterinary documentation where applicable, the certificate of analysis for the lot, and the temperature record. Which exact documents apply depends on the product and destination.

Route-level transit information is on our logistics routes, and the full control set is in cold chain management.
