Ukraine to Milan (Italy): Reefer Road Corridor

Western Ukraine to Lombardy through Slovakia and Austria, the main lane for Italian fruit processors and gelato producers.

  • Main transportRoad, Road — Reefer
  • RegionEurope, European Union

Route Overview

Milan and the surrounding Lombardy region concentrate a large share of Italy’s fruit processing, bakery and frozen dessert manufacturing, and it is one of the more established destinations for Ukrainian frozen berries. The corridor is entirely road, entirely reefer, and unusual only in that it crosses the Alps.

How the lane runs

Loads consolidate in western Ukraine, cross into Slovakia at Uzhhorod, run the Austrian motorway network and enter Italy at Tarvisio. An alternative through Hungary and Slovenia is used when a trailer serves more than one destination on the way. Both are two to three driving days plus the border.

What to plan for

The Alpine section is the part that catches out planners who have only run Poland and Germany lanes. Between November and March, chain requirements, temporary closures and weather-related queueing are routine. That is on top of the ordinary variability at the Ukrainian frontier.

For a first shipment, treat five days as the planning figure and agree a window rather than a date. If your production schedule cannot absorb a two-day slip, hold buffer stock at a European cold store rather than trying to buy certainty from a carrier who cannot sell it.

Commercial notes

Under FCA at the Ukrainian cold store the buyer nominates the carrier and carries risk from loading, which suits importers with an existing Italian reefer partner. Under DAP at the consignee’s cold store the seller carries the corridor risk, and the price should reflect that. See Incoterms 2020 for frozen food.
