Oilseed Conditioning

Letter

Oilseed conditioning is the controlled adjustment of seed moisture and temperature prior to pressing or flaking, optimising cell rupture for oil release while limiting heat damage to protein in the residual cake.

In trade practice

Processors set conditioning cookers or steamers to target moisture and temperature ranges specific to each seed type, such as sunflower or rapeseed. QA teams monitor inlet and outlet moisture using near-infrared or oven methods and log temperatures continuously. Under-conditioning reduces oil yield and press throughput; over-conditioning degrades protein quality in the meal, which matters when the cake is sold for feed. Conditioning records are reviewed during BRCGS or IFS audits as part of process control documentation.

In a specification

A processing specification typically states target moisture content and temperature at the conditioner outlet as acceptance criteria, with permitted tolerances, and requires batch logging for traceability.
