Nut packaging is the selection and application of materials and formats that protect kernel quality from oxygen, moisture and light during storage and export, and must also satisfy EU food contact, allergen labelling and traceability requirements.
In trade practice
Vacuum packing and nitrogen flushing under barrier films are standard for export-grade kernels because oxygen accelerates rancidity; suppliers document the chosen atmosphere and film specification in production records. Buyers specify packaging format, net weight, pallet pattern and any print requirements including allergen declarations in the purchase specification. A declaration of compliance from the packaging supplier is required to confirm that materials meet EU food contact rules. Common errors include using films with insufficient oxygen transmission rates or omitting allergen statements required under Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011.
In a specification
A nut packaging specification states the required film type and barrier properties, modified atmosphere parameters where applicable, net weight tolerances, labelling content including allergen declarations, and the requirement for a declaration of compliance for all food contact materials.
