Non-GMO certification verifies that a product has been produced without genetically modified organisms and that supply-chain segregation controls prevent adventitious contamination, supporting on-pack claims and B2B specifications.
In trade practice
Schemes such as the German Ohne Gentechnik standard administered by VLOG, and various private non-GMO labels, require documented risk analysis, supplier declarations and, where the crop is a known GMO risk, analytical testing at defined thresholds. Segregation records, cleaning logs and identity-preservation documentation are reviewed at audit. A common mistake is relying on supplier declarations alone without supporting test results for high-risk commodities such as soy or maize.
In a specification
A specification requiring non-GMO status should name the accepted scheme or standard, state whether analytical testing is required and define the maximum adventitious presence level permitted, referencing the applicable scheme threshold.
