Deoxynivalenol, or DON, is a mycotoxin produced by Fusarium fungi in wheat, barley, oats and maize, mostly after wet weather at flowering.
In trade practice
It is the most common mycotoxin in European cereals and causes feed refusal in pigs, hence the name vomitoxin. Food maximum levels sit in Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/915 and feed guidance values in Recommendation 2006/576/EC. Milling concentrates it in the bran.
