Aseptic bag-in-box is a packaging format in which a sterilised liquid or puree is filled into a sterile multilayer flexible bag housed inside a protective outer box or drum, enabling ambient storage and long shelf life without refrigeration or preservatives.
In trade practice
The format is the standard industrial packaging for fruit juices, purees and concentrates traded in bulk, with bag volumes ranging from around 20 litres up to 1,000-litre drums. Buyers specify the bag material, fitment type and headspace requirements, as these affect oxygen ingress and shelf life. At intake, QA teams check seal integrity, lot coding and the certificate of analysis accompanying each pallet. A common issue is damage to the outer box during transit, which can compromise the bag fitment and allow contamination.
In a specification
Purchase specifications state the bag volume, liner material, fitment standard, maximum headspace oxygen level and required shelf life remaining at point of delivery.
