Order lead time is the total period between placing an order and receiving the goods, encompassing production, packing, documentation and transport, and reliable lead-time data allows buyers to plan stock levels and promotional commitments accurately.
In trade practice
Suppliers state their standard order lead times in capability questionnaires and commercial offers, distinguishing between in-stock and make-to-order scenarios. For frozen or dried Ukrainian produce, lead time typically includes harvest or processing scheduling, cold-store allocation, export documentation preparation and sea or road transit. Buyers who underestimate lead time risk stock-outs, while overestimating it ties up working capital. Lead times for certified products, such as organic or GlobalG.A.P.-covered lines, may be longer due to segregation and documentation requirements.
In a specification
Purchase orders and framework agreements commonly include a confirmed lead-time field, and some contracts set a maximum lead time as a service-level condition with remedies for breach.
