Short Sea Shipping

Letter

Short sea shipping is the maritime transport of goods over relatively short distances within European or adjacent waters, offering an alternative to road haulage for bulk food cargo on routes where vessel schedules are reliable.

In trade practice

Exporters of grains, oils and bulk dried goods use short sea routes between Baltic, Black Sea and North Sea ports to reduce road congestion and haulage costs. Operators must confirm vessel schedules, port handling capabilities and reefer plug availability where temperature-controlled cargo is involved. Documentation requirements mirror deep-sea shipments: bill of lading, packing list and phytosanitary or health certificates must accompany each consignment.

In a specification

A supply contract may specify the permitted loading ports and require the carrier to confirm vessel name and estimated departure date before shipment.
