Anaerobic Digestion

Letter

Anaerobic digestion is a biological process that breaks down organic waste in sealed, oxygen-free vessels to produce biogas for energy generation and digestate that may be used as a soil amendment, valorising food processing residues.

In trade practice

Processing facilities handling fruit pulp, wastewater sludge or rejected produce may route these streams to an anaerobic digestion plant, either on-site or via a contracted operator. Digestate intended for agricultural use must meet quality and safety standards set by national regulations before land application. Buyers reviewing supplier sustainability credentials may request records of waste diversion volumes and energy recovery data. Misclassifying digestate as a fertiliser without proper testing is a common compliance error.

In a specification

Where anaerobic digestion is referenced in a supplier environmental specification, it is typically listed as an approved disposal route for defined organic waste streams, with records of tonnage and digestate end-use required.
