Starch extraction is the industrial process of separating starch granules from crushed plant tissue using water, sieves and hydrocyclones, with yield efficiency directly affecting the commercial value of the output.
In trade practice
In potato and cereal processing, operators measure extraction yield as recovered starch against the theoretical starch content of the raw material. Quality teams monitor protein and fibre carry-over, which affect the purity grade declared to buyers. Certificates of analysis covering moisture, ash and viscosity accompany each commercial lot. A frequent issue is variable raw-material starch content due to variety or harvest conditions, which causes yield fluctuations that must be communicated to buyers.
In a specification
A contract or specification states minimum starch purity, maximum residual protein and moisture limits, and references the analytical method used to verify yield at the processing plant.
