Aflatoxins in Nuts

Letter

Aflatoxins in nuts are toxic fungal metabolites produced by Aspergillus moulds that contaminate kernels during cultivation, harvest or storage, and are subject to strict EU maximum levels that govern import eligibility.

In trade practice

Suppliers must present a mycotoxin test report from an accredited laboratory covering total aflatoxins and aflatoxin B1 for each consignment. EU official controls apply risk-based sampling plans at the border, and lots from origins with a history of non-compliance face increased frequency checks. Common failures include inadequate sampling at origin, poor drying after harvest and storage in humid conditions that allow mould growth to continue.

In a specification

A purchase specification should name the applicable maximum levels instrument, require ISO 17025-accredited laboratory analysis and specify the sampling plan method used at origin.
