Grain storage is the holding of cleaned, dried grain in silos, bins or warehouses under controlled temperature and aeration conditions to preserve quality and prevent deterioration between harvest and end use.
In trade practice
Operators monitor moisture content, grain temperature and CO2 levels continuously, using aeration fans to manage hot spots and prevent condensation. Pest control programmes, including fumigation where required by the importing country, are documented and presented to buyers on request. A common error is storing grain above the safe moisture threshold, which accelerates mould growth and mycotoxin development. Warehouse receipts and storage certificates form part of the export documentation package for grain shipped from Ukraine.
In a specification
A storage specification or warehouse agreement states the maximum permitted moisture content on intake, the target storage temperature range, the aeration regime and the inspection frequency.
