ISO 14001 is the international standard for environmental management systems, requiring organisations to identify their environmental impacts, comply with applicable legal obligations and pursue continual improvement in environmental performance.
In trade practice
Food and agricultural suppliers holding ISO 14001 certification demonstrate to buyers that environmental risks — such as waste management, energy use, water consumption and emissions — are systematically controlled. Certification is granted by accredited bodies following a site audit and is maintained through annual surveillance. Buyers with corporate sustainability commitments increasingly include ISO 14001 in preferred-supplier criteria or sustainability questionnaires, particularly for large-volume ingredient and processing contracts.
In a specification
Sustainability annexes to supply agreements may list ISO 14001 certification as a preferred or mandatory requirement, specifying that the certificate must cover the relevant production site and remain current throughout the contract term.
