Is ISO 22000 GFSI-recognised?

Short answer

On its own, no. ISO 22000:2018 is a food safety management system standard and can be certified, but it does not carry GFSI recognition by itself. The recognised programme built on it is FSSC 22000, which combines ISO 22000 with sector-specific prerequisite programmes from the ISO/TS 22002 series and a set of FSSC additional requirements.

What that means in practice

If a buyer specification says “GFSI-recognised certification required”, a supplier holding only ISO 22000 does not meet it. The gap is not the management system, which is the same document in both cases. The gap is the prescriptive prerequisite programme detail and the additional requirements that FSSC layers on top, plus the unannounced audit element that FSSC applies.

When ISO 22000 alone is still useful

For a trading company, a warehouse or a service provider outside the retail supply chain, ISO 22000 can be an entirely reasonable choice. It also makes the step up to FSSC 22000 cheap, because the management system is already in place and only the prerequisite programme and additional requirements need closing.

Side by side comparison: FSSC 22000 vs ISO 22000.
